Why are role models important?
As professional athletes, there is tremendous pressure to reach new heights. Constantly being in the spot light, they are thrust into the position of becoming a role model. Although many athletes fail at this task, some rise to the occasion and go above beyond the call of duty to be the best they can be. These outstanding citizens prove time and time again that it is possible to not be consumed by greed and instead set the tone for their fans and the rest of the world. The demonstration that they set for the millions of people watching them echo's throughout the community and creates a ripple effect for younger generations to look up to.
Role models are an essential part of any persons life. They often guide us to be better people and set a demonstration for us to follow. They embody the value and work ethics we admire, and are successful, well-balanced people who have achieved greatness and contribute to their community. We strive to mold ourselves after the person who we look up to and attempt to act in their image. Often times it is difficult to look at celebrities as role models when they are acting indecent or immoral. However, there are those who are in the centre of attention and use that to make the world a better place with the influence they posses. It is important for children growing up to have someone to look up to, whether it be a parent guardian or a professional athlete, they impact the younger generation and greatly influence the growth of individuals.
Some professional athletes who are great role models include;
1) Michael Jordan
2) Clara Hughes
3) Hayley Wickenheiser
